We have pre-K-12 regular and special education classroom teachers; pre-school special education teachers; school nurses; librarians; counselors; psychologists; physical, occupational and speech therapists; vocational education teachers; and teacher experts. Our 3,500 members are also part of our state affiliate, NEA-Alaska (the largest employee organization in Alaska) and the National Education Association (the largest employee organization in the country.)

School sites: AEA members work in every school and program in our district. The Anchorage School District is the 87th largest school district in the country. It is comprised of 104 schools and special program sites: 60 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, 8 high schools, 6 charter schools, and 20 other sites.

Among the committees are the Employee Rights Committee, the Evaluation Committee, the Communications Committee, and the Political Action Committee for Education. A full time release president is the public spokesperson for the association.

Classroom lessonGovernance: The Anchorage Education Association is governed by our membership. It is a representative, grass roots democratic organization in which all policy, budgetary and goal decisions are member-driven. The key governance bodies are the Representative Council, made up of representatives from every school and program in the district, and the Board of Directors, composed of 18 directors and officers.

Programs: The Anchorage Education Association serves the almost 50,000 students and families as a leader in promoting high standards of excellence in education for every child. Working independently or in conjunction with our state and national affiliates, AEA utilizes our resources to support our membership.
